What would you change about the way your work works? Me – I would delete the roadblocks. And let’s face it, roadblocks can come in all forms - from too many managers to the lack of the right tools.
I’ve sat in on meetings where folks were trying to create a process using a hodge-podge of tools and in my head I had visions of a plan being held together by lots and lots of duct tape. Don’t get me wrong, duct tape has saved me countless times, especially in my first home. But I am the first to admit, it’s not a long-term solution. And neither are these work around methods.
Simple example – I recently joined a new team and we are in the process of integrating our communications and launch calendars. The initial idea was to have everyone submit their information and one person would consolidate it. Not great, but for the initial draft it could probably work. But how do you sustain that? How do you manage version control with eight to ten people making edits simultaneously? You use IBM Docs! I have to say, it was a great feeling introducing this technology to the team. Why? Because it works. You don’t need duct tape. There are no extra layers. No roadblocks. It’s simple.
